Since the time that everybody talks about it, it is high time that I started to English time.
Actually, "The Shadow of the Wind, throne in my PAL for several years now, but who knows why, the critics do that now flourish on blogs. All this made me want to immerse myself in the mood for this writer.
Knowing in advance that this novel will please me, I am eager to run to my nearest bookstore to buy "The game of the angel" and as the saying threes , I came face to face with his latest novel "Marina". The favorite of the author as he says. In fact, it's not really his last novel, since it was published there over 10 years and reappeared recently in Spain.
So, there is a big dilemma for me now, by which I begin??
" Shadow of the Wind ": "In Barcelona in the post-civil war," city of wonders "marked by the defeat, hardship, hatred always lurking . On a misty morning in 1945, a man takes his little boy - Daniel Sempere, the narrator - a mysterious place in the Gothic Quarter: The Cemetery of Forgotten Books. The child, who still dreams of his dead mother, and is invited by his father, a modest shopkeeper used books, a strange ritual that is passed from generation to generation there must "adopt" a volume of hundreds of thousands. There, he meets the book that will change the course of his life forever mark and dragged into a labyrinth of adventures and secrets "buried in the soul of the city": The Shadow of the Wind. With this history, bildungsroman evoking the emotions of adolescence, fantastic tale in the tradition of Phantom of the Opera or the Master and Margarita, where the mysteries puzzle fit together like Russian dolls, Carlos Ruiz Zafon inextricably mixes literature and life. "
" The game of the angel ": "In Barcelona the turbulent 1920s, David, a young writer haunted by an impossible love, receives the unexpected offer of a mysterious publisher: write a book like he never existed, "a story for which men would be able to live and die, to kill and be killed," in exchange for a fortune and, perhaps be many more. From the day he accepts the contract, a strange mechanical destruction is taking place around him, threatening the people he loves most in the world. By marketing his talent as a writer, David would he sell his soul to the devil? "
" Marina ":" Oscar Drai, fifteen years, disappeared for a week the boarding house where he is. Where did he go and that it happened? When the story begins, Oscar wandering around Barcelona. Lured by a mysterious house apparently abandoned, it gets inside. Believing himself alone, he began his investigations. While he is looking at a strange pocket watch left on a table, he realizes that someone is watching. Terrified, he fled. On returning to boarding school, he realizes that he kept the watch. Tormented by remorse, he returned a few days later in the big house. He then meets Marina, daughter of the owner. It was his age, audacity and a very lively intelligence. She leads her new companion in solving a mystery that torments: the heart of Barcelona's oldest cemetery, an old veiled woman visiting an unmarked grave on which there is a drawing of a black butterfly. Who is she, and sleeping under the tombstone? In conducting their investigation, the two teenagers crossed the boundaries of private property abandoned. In the greenhouse that adjoins, puppets partially amputated their members hang in the air. Suddenly, they descend slowly and seem to come alive. A stench pervades the greenhouse ... On the front, a black butterfly identical to that of the grave seems to contemplate the awful scene. Browsing the scariest places in Barcelona, wandering aimlessly in the bowels of underground creatures which live in a nightmare, sinking behind the scenes of a disturbing disused theater, Oscar and Marina wake of the protagonists decades-old tragedy. Revenge is on the way, driven by an army of ghosts, guided by a scientist of genius and a hopeless romantic. Dragged into senseless violence of the shadows straight out of the past, Oscar and Marina nearly die. However, it will attack them where they did not expect ... "
So which do you recommend first?
EDIT: No need to advise me. I open " Marina" on the subway this morning and could not do de-taped. As some have told me yesterday via Twitter or FB as "The Game the Angel "is preferably after reading" The Shadow of the Wind "(because there was a character in common), I decided to put them both aside for when I'm quietly settled in Bordeaux. In Meanwhile, spin your bookseller, for those who loves this author, "Marina " is captivating (and I'm only the fortieth page) ...
